Floor and Decor store to open in Colonie Center

- By Melissa Manno

COLONIE — Floor and Decor, a hard-surface flooring retailer, is slated to take over the remainder of the lower level space formerly occupied by Sears at Colonie Center, which has been empty since the department store closed in 2017.

After six years of vacancy, the storefront on the south end of the shopping center will once again serve customers, offering an expansive assortment of tile, wood, laminate, vinyl and natural stone flooring as well as decorative and installation accessories and free design services. The store, which borders Whole Foods, will be 57,204 square feet, according to a site plan posted on the developer’s website.

The development, which will mark the fifth Floor and Decor store in New York, comes as the Atlanta-based retailer looks to expand its national footprint. Founded in 2000, the company operates 178 warehouse-format stores and five design studios in 35 states, its website states. The brand hopes to expand its store base to 500 locations over the next decade.

The Colonie Center location will be the retailer’s first in the Capital Region. The closest Floor and Decor is in West Hartford, Conn.

Information regarding an estimated opening date is not available. The section of the mall, which currently includes the Whole Foods Market, is owned by Sears spinoff Seritage Growth Properties. Colonie

Center management referred questions about the new store to Seritage, which did not immediately respond to an inquiry.

The new tenant is a long time coming for the space where rumors of potential replacements have circulated over the past few years. In 2019, outdoor sporting retailer REI looked at the location, but it’s unclear why those plans fell through.

Floor and Decor is not the only change coming to the shopping center. Longtime tenants Francesca’s and Vendor Square have permanently closed their doors. But women’s clothing retailer Daily Thread is preparing to open in early March, Colonie Center General Manager Jeff Law said.
