Red Wings’ Larkin gets big deal
DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings have signed center Dylan Larkin, their captain, to an eight-year, $69.6 million contract.
The Red Wings announced the deal on Wednesday, two days before the NHL trade deadline.
Larkin’s new contract will pay him an average of $8.7 million per year.
Also on Wednesday, the Red Wings acquired a conditional first-round pick and a 2023 secondround pick from Vancouver for defenseman Filip Hronek and a 2023 fourth-rounder.
The first-rounder is the Islanders’ pick from the trade for Bo Horvat, which is top-12 protected.
The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, a former Union College standout, from the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. Arizona will receive a 2026 thirdround pick. The Coyotes also traded defenseman Jakob Chychrun to Ottawa with the Senators sending Arizona a conditional 2023 first-round pick, conditional 2024 second-rounder and a second-rounder in 2026..
The reigning champion Colorado Avalanche acquired center Lars Eller from the Washington Capitals for a 2025 second-round pick.
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded traded defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to Los Angeles. Columbus got two high draft picks from the Kings, along with veteran goalie Jonathan Quick.
NFL coach’s case may be heard
NEW YORK — NFL coach Brian Flores can press discrimination claims against the league and three teams after a federal judge on Wednesday rejected the option of arbitration, presumably before Commissioner Roger Goodell. The written decision by Judge Valerie Caproni in Manhattan clearing the way for Flores to bring his claims to trial also required two other coaches who joined the lawsuit to submit to arbitration.
Georgia player accused in fatality
Warrants were issued Wednesday for the arrest of Jalen Carter, a potential top-five pick in the coming NFL draft, in connection with a car crash in January that killed University of Georgia teammate Devin Willock, 20, and the other driver, Chandler Lecroy, 24, a recruiting analyst for the team.
