Siena women win their 2nd straight game

The Siena women’s lacrosse team claimed its second straight win, edging host St. Bonaventur­e 14-12 on Wednesday in a nonleague contest.

The Saints snapped an 11-11 deadlock in the fourth quarter with three of the game’s final four goals to escape with the victory. Grace Dobrzynski’s goal with 11 minutes, 47 seconds left gave Siena the lead and Kelly Logue added another with 8:48 to go to make it 13-11.

Abby Hiltz scored for the Bonnies to cut the lead to 13-12 at 5:35 but Rebecca Gilhooley iced the win with her fifth goal of the game and the day’s final tally with just 3:04 to play for the Saints.

Siena raced out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained a solid 9-6 halftime advantage, led by three first-half goals from Gilhooley.

St. Bonaventur­e opened up the second half with four straight goals to take a 10-9 lead before Gilhooley and Katy Wangsness closed the third with goals to give the Saints the lead back at 11-10. Jessica Notaro sent home the first goal of the fourth period to knot the game at 11 for the Bonnies.

Dobrzynski finished with two goals and five assists along with Gilhooley’s five goals and an assist to lead the Siena offense.

Hiltz closed with four goals and an assist for St. Bonaventur­e.

The Saints return to action against visiting New Hampshire on Saturday in Loudonvill­e.

Syracuse 22, Ualbany 5: Secondrank­ed Syracuse made quick work of visiting Ualbany, jumping out to an 11-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Orange continued to pile on the goals on the way to an easy 17-goal win to keep their perfect record intact and climb to 5-0 overall on the season. Three different Syracuse players tallied seven points each to lead the offense. Megan Carney had five goals and two assists, Meaghan Tyrrell scored three goals and added four assists and Emma Ward chipped in with two goals and five assists for Syracuse. Shonly Wallace scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Great Danes attack. Bryar Hogg, Ava Poupard and Mia Brunken had the other goals for Ualbany, which had its modest twogame winning streak snapped. The Great Danes now sit at 2-3 on the season. Ualbany looks to get back in the win column on Saturday against Colgate back at John Fallon Field in Albany. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
