Leafs’ O’reilly to be out long term

- — Wire reports

NEWARK, N.J. — Toronto Maple Leafs center Ryan O’reilly will be out for quite some time because of a broken finger.

O’reilly, 32, is going on long-term injured reserve, which means he must miss the next 10 games.

The Maple Leafs acquired O’reilly in a trade with St. Louis last month. He has since put up five points in eight games before taking a puck off his left hand late in the second period of a 4-1 loss Saturday at Vancouver.

Also, Leafs captain John Tavares will be held out with an undisclosed ailment when the team visits the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Giannis’ triple-double taken away

NEW YORK — Giannis Antetokounmpo said he stole a triple-double. The NBA took it back.

The league adjusted the statistics from the Milwaukee-washington game Sunday and erased Antetokounmpo’s final rebound, the one that would have given him a triple-double.

He grabbed a defensive rebound with about nine seconds left, knowing that left him one rebound short of 10. He hustled the ball downcourt, got near the rim the Bucks were shooting at, hesitated for a moment before throwing the ball intentionally into the bottom of the rim and catching it.

“Kind of stole one,” Antetokounmpo said Sunday before the change.

Iowa suit using taxpayer money

Iowa taxpayers will pay $2 million to help the University of Iowa athletic department settle a lawsuit brought by former football players who alleged racial discrimination existed in coach Kirk Ferentz’s program, a state board decided in a vote Monday.

The state’s Appeal Board voted 2-1 to approve the use of taxpayer funds for half of the $4.175 million settlement over the objection of State Auditor Rob Sand, who said athletic director Gary Barta should be fired for a series of lawsuits ending in settlements under his watch.
