Jets plan to re-sign place kicker Zuerlein

-

The New York Jets are resigning kicker Greg Zuerlein, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday. Zuerlein won a training camp competition last summer with Eddy Pineiro and had a solid first season with the Jets, including kicking a franchise-record 60yard field goal.

After a few years of inconsistency at the kicker spot, the Jets made resigning the steady Zuerlein a priority in free agency. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced the deal.

ESPN first reported the agreement between Zuerlein and the Jets. Terms of the deal weren’t immediately available.

While the Jets continue to wait for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to decide on his playing future and if he would approve a trade to New York, they have begun to shore up other areas of the roster.

The Jets agreed to terms on a trade with Baltimore last Thursday to acquire safety Chuck Clark. They also re-signed linebacker Quincy Williams to a three-year deal on Sunday.

Giants: New York kept its special teams unit together, re-signing punter

Jamie Gillan and long snapper Casey Kreiter. The Giants announced the signings on Monday. Gillian averaged a career-best 46.8 yards on 74 punts last season, his first with the Giants. He also served as the holder for placekicker Graham Gano, who hit 29 of 32 field goals attempts and 32 of 34 extra points. Kreiter was signed by the Giants in 2020 after spending the previous four seasons with Denver. He played in all 19 games last season and he has not missed a game since the start of the 2017 season.

Bills: Buffalo reached an agreement to sign Dallas Cowboys guard Connor Mcgovern to a three-year contract, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal does not become official until the NFL’S signing period opens on Wednesday. The agreement was first reported by Nfl.com. Mcgovern was selected by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2019 draft, and had 29 starts in 45 games with the team over the past three years after spending his rookie season on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle. The 25-year-old addresses a pending need for Buffalo, with starting left guard Rodger Saffold and his backup, Bobby Hart, both pending unrestricted free agents. In other moves, the Bills announced reaching agreements to re-sign punter Sam Martin and linebacker Tyler Matakevich and backup defensive back Cam Lewis before they were eligible to hit the free agent market.

Patriots: New England has taken a step toward maintaining some stability in its secondary, agreeing to terms on a new contract to retain free agent cornerback Jonathan Jones. A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday the 29-year-old intends to sign a two-year deal worth a maximum value of $20 million, with $13 million guaranteed.
