Three-peat sectional champ Schuylervi­lle falls in regional play

SCHUYLERVI­LLE — It was hardly the way Schuylervi­lle three-sport standout Macey Koval looked to conclude her scholastic athletic career Tuesday evening. The Black Horses’ star senior midfielder spent the bulk of 50 minutes of play having her every move hounded by Section I champion Bronxville’s standout defensive unit.

Koval, who tallied five goals against Cohoes in the Section II Class D final, was held without a goal against the Broncos as Schuylervi­lle dropped an 18-2 decision in state regional play.

The Broncos captured the 2022 state championsh­ip, including defeating the Black Horses 18-1 in regional play. Tuesday, Bronxville scored nine goals in each half to advance.

“We’ve had a few games like this during the year where the teams were like Bronxville,” said Koval, who also played soccer and was named the Foothills Council’s basketball Most Valuable Player during the winter. “We are thankful for those teams because they leave us a better team. I think (the team’s nine seniors) are leaving this program great because the way we connected with the younger kids helps them connect with each other. That will continue throughout the years.”

“They have battled and worked very hard. We are still a relatively young lacrosse program in my eyes and they are continuing to build it,” Schuylervi­lle coach Erin Lloyd said.

Koval, who has decided to focus on academics and not play varsity sports in college when she attends Cornell to study animal science, led the Black Horses (13-7) to their third straight sectional title, and fifth since 2017, with the game-winning tally in an 11-10 overtime triumph against Cohoes.
