Dayter among top point producers in the nation

Her points per game ranked second in DIII and her points ranked third

Senior Samantha Dayter was not only the top scorer on the SUNY Canton women’s lacrosse team and the North Atlantic Conference, but she was one of the top point producers in the NCAA.

The 5-foot-8 midfielder from Cohoes and a Cohoes High graduate finished the season with 133 points on 73 goals and 60 assists, the points and assists are school records and the goals second in the record book. Her points per game (7.82) ranked second in Division III and her points ranked third. She was also sixth in assists and eighth in assists per game (3.53). Her points, assists and goals are one-season Canton records and her assists (129) and points (292) are career records.

Dayter was named NAC Player of the Year for the third straight season and earned her third straight first team honor. She scored at least one goal in all 17 games she played and had eight goals and eight assists against Potsdam, five goals and 10 assists against Maine Maritime and nine goals and four assists against Husson, all were victories. The Roos finished 10-8 overall and 5-0 in league play.

Gavin Van Kempen (Castleton)

The 6-foot-6, 225pound freshman righthande­r had a 3-0 record with a save for the West Virginia baseball team, the Mountainee­rs finishing 39-18 overall and 15-9 in the Big 12 Conference. The Maple Hill High graduate had a 4.15 earned run average in 11 games and four starts. He worked 26 innings and gave up 21 hits and 13 runs (12 earned), with 12 walks and 21 strikeouts.

Lindsey Frank (Saratoga Springs)

The 5-foot-6 senior midfielder was named an honorable mention on the Division I All-america team by USA Lacrosse Magazine on May 12 for her play for 17-4 Richmond (Va.). Earlier, the Saratoga High graduate earned first team honors by the Atlantic 10 Conference. Frank finished the season with a team-high 67 goals, 23 assists and 90 points along with 33

ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and 74 draw controls.

Samantha Devito (Ballston Spa)

The junior midfielder was named to the All-ivy League second team after her season with the Princeton (N.J.) women’s lacrosse team. The Ballston Spa High graduate had nine goals and three

assists for 12 points with 15 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and 23 draw controls. Devito had two goals and an assist in an 11-8 victory over USC and a goal and two assists in a 20-16 league victory over Brown.

Jack Mahoney (Latham)

The 6-foot-1 graduate student had a strong season pitching in relief for the Manhattan baseball team, the Jaspers finishing 22-34. The left-hander, a Shaker High graduate, worked in 15 games out of the bullpen and had a 3-1 record with two saves. He had a 3.43 earned run average. In 42 innings, Mahoney gave up 36 hits and 23 runs (16 earned), with 18 walks and 36 strikeouts.

Aaron Whitley (Niskayuna)

The senior earned Liberty League first-team honors after a big season for the Rochester baseball team, the Yellowjack­ets going 1-2 in the league tournament to finish 28-14. The Niskayuna High graduate led the team in hitting with a .377 average. He had 63 hits in 167 at-bats with 12 doubles, four triples, 51 runs scored and 25 runs batted in. He stole 23 bases on 25 attempts.

Madison Burns (East Greenbush)

The 5-foot-10 graduate student was named to the Central Atlantic Athletic Conference second team for her pitching with the 35-19 Caldwell (N.J.) softball team. The right-hander, a Columbia High graduate, was 11-4 with a 1.78 earned run average in 21 games and 11 starts. In 86.1 innings she gave up 79 hits and 30 runs (22 earned), with 33 walks and 44 strikeouts.

Tyler Cannoe (Schenectad­y)

The senior first baseman batted .295 for the Salve Regina (R.I.) baseball team, the Seahawks finishing 39-10-1 after going 2-2 in the Division III Regionals. The Scotiaglen­ville High graduate led the team in doubles (15) and home runs (eight) and was second in runs batted in (51). He also had two triples, 51 runs scored and was 6for-6 in stolen bases. In the field, Cannoe made eight errors on 336 chances (.976).

Emma Scheeren (Schaghtico­ke)

The junior had a strong season with the Bay Path (Mass.) softball team, the Wildcats finishing 11-20 on the season. The Averill Park High graduate batted .360 (36-for-100) with three doubles, two triples, 23 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. Scheeren also pitched in 11 games with five starts and had a 3-2 record. She had three complete games.
