Padres, Tatis Jr. pound Marlins
MIAMI — Joe Musgrove carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. had three doubles and four RBIS and the San Diego Padres beat the Miami Marlins 10-1 on Thursday.
Recently acquired Gary Sánchez homered for the second consecutive day, part of San Diego’s 11-hit effort after being limited to two hits by three Miami pitchers Wednesday. The Padres finished 5-4 in their nine-game trip. Sánchez has hit safely in the three games since joining his new club.
The 30-year-old Musgrove (3-2) held Miami hitless until Luis Arraez’s infield single. The righthander, who pitched the Padres’ only no-hitter in April 2021, allowed a third-inning run, three hits, walked three and struck out three over six innings.
Diamondbacks 6, Rockies
5: Corbin Carroll had a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning and Arizona moved into a tie with the idle Los Angeles Dodgers for a share of the NL West lead. Gabriel Moreno walked with one out against Pierce Johnson (0-2), and Ketel Marte doubled with two outs, moving Moreno to third. With first base open and Christian Walker on deck, the Rockies decided to pitch to Carroll, and he came through with a liner for his first career walk-off hit. Ezequiel Tovar homered leading off the seventh for Colorado.
Blue Jays 3, Brewers 1:
Kevin Gausman pitched 62⁄3 shutout innings to win back-toback starts for the first time this season, Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman homered and Toronto dealt Milwaukee its fifth loss in seven games. Gausman (4-3) struck out 11, giving him 100 on the season and reclaiming the AL lead from Angels righthander Shohei Ohtani (90).
Gausman allowed five hits and walked two. Jordan Romano earned his 13th save in 16 chances. Bichette and Chapman both connected off Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta (5-5) in a three-run first inning.
Dodgers-rangers trade: The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired right-hander Ricky Vanasco from the Texas Rangers for lefty Luis Valdez on Thursday. Righthander Zack Burdi was also designated for assignment by the Dodgers to make room on their 40-man roster. Vanasco, a 15th-round draft pick of Texas in 2017, was designated for assignment on Monday. The 19-year-old Valdez was 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA in eight games for Low-a Rancho Cucamonga this season. He was signed by the Dodgers as a minor league free agent out of Mexico in 2019.
TV rights: A federal bankruptcy judge has ordered Diamond Sports to pay the full value of its media contracts to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers. Judge Christopher Lopez made the ruling on Thursday in Houston. Diamond Sports, which owns 19 networks under the Bally Sports banner, has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the Southern District of Texas since it filed in March. Diamond said in a financial filing last fall it had debt of $8.67 billion. On Tuesday, the last San Diego Padres
game was aired on Bally Sports San Diego after Diamond Sports missed a rights payment fee and let the grace period expire. MLB took over production of Padres’ telecasts, beginning with Wednesday’s game at the Miami Marlins.
Twins: The Minnesota Twins reinstated second baseman Jorge Polanco from the 10-day injured list Thursday before their game against Cleveland, bringing their regular lineup nearly back to full strength. Polanco missed 11 games with a strained left hamstring. He batted leadoff for the opener of a fourgame series against the Guardians, and rookie infielder Edouard Julien was sent to Triple-a St. Paul.
Guardians: The Cleveland Guardians will place starting pitcher Cal Quantrill on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation, creating one opening in the rotation with the impending return of Aaron Civale and Triston Mckenzie from their injuries. Manager Terry Francona said before the team’s game Thursday at Minnesota that Quantrill traveled back to Cleveland for an MRI exam following a season-worst outing Tuesday at Baltimore. He gave up eight runs eight hits and two walks in 4 innings. Francona said he expects Quantrill, who has a 5.61 ERA in 11 starts, to be out for “a number of days, not weeks.”
