Ualbany adds five football players
The University at Albany football team announced Wednesday an early signing class of five players.
The Great Danes signed quarterback Van Weber of Rutherford (N.J.) High, cornerback Ervin Wiggins Jr. of East High in Rochester, defensive lineman Zakar Morris of Iona Prep in Wappingers Falls, running back Nwojo Uga of Worcester (Mass.) Academy Prep and linebacker Devin Harper of Lackawanna Junior College in Scranton, Pa.
Ualbany is coming off its first trip to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals in program history.
Nets’ Ben Simmons injured
NEW YORK — Ben Simmons won’t return to the Brooklyn Nets until at least January because of a pinched nerve in his lower back.
The Nets said Wednesday that Simmons, who sustained his latest back injury Nov. 6, has shown consistent strength improvement in his back over the past two weeks. However, they added that he is still doing only individual court work and that his status would be updated again in approximately two weeks.
Ruling delayed in Morant case
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee judge on Wednesday said she won’t immediately hand down a ruling on whether Ja Morant’s legal team successfully argued that the NBA star is immune from being sued by a teenager he punched during a pickup game in 2022.
According to The Commercial Appeal, Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney said she needs more time due to the lack of case precedent surrounding the lawsuit.
Mccombs family joins Spurs
SAN ANTONIO — The Mccombs family has purchased a share of the San Antonio Spurs, returning after 30 years to the organization their patriarch helped establish and once owned.
Billy Joe “Red” Mccombs owned at least a share of the Spurs for 11 years and was the team’s primary owner for five years. Mccombs, who died on Feb. 19 at age 95 after a lengthy illness, was a driving force in bringing the franchise to San Antonio in 1973.
Mets acquire Houser, Taylor
MILWAUKEE — The New York Mets acquired right-handed pitcher Adrian Houser and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday for minor league pitcher Coleman Crow.
Jury dismisses lawsuit vs. LSU
