ALBANY — James J. Carney, Sr., 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Catherine (Duffy) Carney.

James was born on December 28, 1930, in Syracuse, to the late James M. and Shirley Amelia (Leazotte) Carney. James served proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952. He was a self-employed builder. In his younger days, he enjoyed Sunday cookouts at Gleasons Roundtop and Knickerboc­ker Lakes with the Carney brothers and their families. Many a Friday night was spent at Grandma Shirley Carney’s house with all the cousins. There were also trips to Jamestown, R.I. to visit the Duffy’s. Later years saw many family dinners and backyard gatherings at the Astriab’s. Jim enjoyed watching pro football, baseball, and golf on TV. He liked watching old movies on TCM and listening to Frank Sinatra in the car while ferrying his grandchild­ren around.

James is survived by his children, David Carney (Gina), Mary Stanton, James Carney Jr. (Lisa) and Megan Oberting (Edward). He was Poppy to grandchild­ren, Caleb Carney (Zara), Kyle Carney (Samantha), Jeanette Stanton (Andrew Negus), Connor Lawrence, Mackenzie Lawrence (Clare), Shane

Carney, Garrett Carney; and great-granddaugh­ters, Amalia and Freya Carney. He is also survived by nieces, Duffy Astriab, Michol Astriab Merriman, and Chiara Astriab; as well as several sisters- and brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predecease­d by his siblings, William Carney, Patricia Bussey, Mary Carney, Thomas Carney, and Richard Carney. He was also predecease­d by sister-inlaw, Christina Astriab; and several other sisters- and brothers-in-law.

The family would like to thank the staff of Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, especially Connie, Christine and Denise, for the loving care provided to our father in the last year of his life; and Megan Baffuto, for her help with navigating the Medicaid process. Memorial donations in his name can be made to the Daughters of Sarah Jewish Foundation, 180 Washington Avenue Ext., Albany, N.Y. 12203.

Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 18, at Newcomer Funerals & Cremations, 343 New Karner Rd., Albany, N.Y. 12205. Burial with military honors at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery will be private at the convenienc­e of the family.
