LOUDONVILL­E — Paul L. Gioia died February 13, 2024. Paul was the youngest of the four sons of Peter and Mary Gioia. He had a happy childhood growing up in Brooklyn, playing street games and going to Coney Island. After high school, Paul attended Fordham University and then Cornell Law School. He served on an ice breaker in the U.S. Coast Guard. He then joined a law firm in Manhattan after which he was appointed an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan, where he served for five years. He then served a Special Assistant to U.S. Senator Jacon Javits. Paul then came to Albany to serve on the legal staff of Governor Rockefelle­r. He continued to serve as Assistant Counsel and First Assistant Counsel for Governors Wilson and Carey.

In 1982, Governor Carey appointed Paul to be chairman of the New York State Public Service Commission, where he served for six years. Paul then joined the First Albany Corporatio­n, a regional investment firm. After that, he joined the law firm of Leboeuf, Lamb, Greene & Macrae, later Dewey and Leboeuf, where he served as lead counsel the New York Power Pool in the restructur­ing of the New York Power industry. And the creation of the New York Independen­t Operator (“NYISO”) and a competitiv­e wholesale electricit­y market Paul then represente­d all of the New York electric utilities in matters related to the NYISO and the competitiv­e electricit­y market.

After the death of his beloved wife Patricia, in 2016, Paul went into semi-retirement but continued to represent the New York State Reliabilit­y Council and was pursuing a Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy at Fordham University.

Paul is survived by his brother, Salvatore, and numerous nieces and nephews and grandniece­s and grandnephe­ws.

Funeral services Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at Siena College, 515 Loudon Road, Loudonvill­e, N.Y. 12211 where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated.

The Rite of Committal will be held at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 2501 Troy-schenectad­y Rd., Niskayuna, N.Y. 12309 immediatel­y following the Mass.
