Danes’ Thomas named to all-america East second team
Teammate Amar'e Marshall is on third team
Coaches chose team excellence over individual performance in selecting the America East postseason awards, which were announced Thursday.
University at Albany point guard Sebastian Thomas, despite a topthree ranking in scoring and assists, was relegated to the all-conference second team. Teammate Amar’e Marshall is on the third team.
No other Great Danes were recognized in this season’s postseason awards.
Vermont, which won its eighth straight regular-season America East title, had one player on each of the three teams as well as landing two on the all-defensive team and another on the all-academic team. Ualbany (1317, 5-11 league), which finished eighth in the nineteam conference, will face Vermont (25-6, 15-1) in a quarterfinal tournament game at 3 p.m. Saturday in Burlington, Vt.
A Providence native who transferred after two seasons at Rhode Island, Thomas was beaten out for Newcomer of the Year by Vermont guard Shamir Bogues, who averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists after transferring from Tarleton State. Bogues was voted to the all-conference first team.
Thomas is second in the America East in scoring (19.2) and third in assists (5.0). Marshall, a
Montclair, N.J. native who transferred from Hofstra, ranks fifth in scoring (16.9) and 19th in rebounding (5.0).
No Ualbany player was selected to the three allconference teams last season, although Jonathan Beagle was chosen Rookie of the Year and on the all-rookie team. Beagle played 22 games for the Danes this season before leaving the team. His 9.5 rebounds per game still leads the America East.
New Hampshire’s Clarence Daniels, the America East scoring leader and second in rebounding, was named Player of the Year. Vermont’s John
Becker was chosen as Coach of the Year for the seventh time.
