Hamlin wins 4th at famed bullring

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway, passing Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Martin Truex Jr. in the final laps for his fourth victory at the famed short track.

It was Hamlin’s 52nd career win and locks him into the playoffs. Brad Keselowski finished third in a Ford, Alex Bowman was fourth in a Chevrolet and Bowman’s Hendrick Motorsport­s teammate Kyle Larson was fifth.

Alonso deal unlikely in-season

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Mets owner Steve Cohen doesn’t expect to sign a long-term contract with star first baseman Pete Alonso before the end of the season. On the field, Jose Iglesias hit a walk-off homer to give the Mets a 7-6 split-squad win over Miami. Luke Voit homered in a 9-8 split-squad loss to Washington.

X-rays negative on Lemahieu

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Yankees said X-rays on the right foot of leadoff hitter DJ Lemahieu were negative. Although sore, Lemahieu remains day-to-day after fouling a ball off his foot over the weekend.

Reliever Tommy Kahnle, a Shaker High graduate, threw 20 pitches over one inning in a simulated game. He is expected to miss at least the first week of the regular season because of a right shoulder injury.

On the field, New York allowed nine runs in the first inning, including homers by Trevor Story, Connor Wong and Rafael Devers, in a 12-6 defeat against the Red Sox.
