Yanks-guardians rained out; will play 2 Saturday

-

CLEVELAND — Steady rain and the forecast for strong winds postponed the opener of a three-game series Friday night between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians.

The teams will play a split doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 12:10 p.m. The second game will start at 6:10 p.m.

This is New York’s only visit to Cleveland this season, so it was essential for the game to made up right away.

Carlos Carrasco is expected to pitch Game 1 for the Guardians with Triston Mckenzie pitching the second game.

New York will start Clarke Schmidt in Game 1, and Cody Poteet will make his season debut in the second game.

Ohtani: A federal judge ordered the former longtime interpreter for Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani to undergo gambling addiction treatment in a sports betting case stemming from allegations he stole $16 million from the Japanese baseball player’s bank account to pay off debts.

Ippei Mizuhara exploited his personal and professional relationship with Ohtani to plunder millions from the two-way player’s account for years, prosecutors said, at times impersonating Ohtani to bankers.

Mizuhara only spoke on Friday to answer the judge’s questions, saying “yes” when Audero asked if he understood several parts of the case and his bond conditions.

Astros: Ace Justin Verlander is scheduled to make his second and likely final rehabilitation start for Double-a Corpus Christi on Saturday night.

Rockies: Right-hander Daniel Bard needs surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow and will not pitch again this season, manager Bud Black said. Agent change: Jordan Montgomery switched agents from Scott Boras to Joel Wolfe of Wasserman Media Group after his drawn out free agency ended with a $25 million, oneyear contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks rather than a long-term deal.
