New Lincoln Park pool construction starts Monday
ALBANY — Contractors will start construction of the new Lincoln Park pool on Monday, aiming to complete the project in a little over a year, according to Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan’s office.
The city plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in May.
Outdoor construction, weather permitting, will continue until late fall of this year, while interior renovations in the existing 1930s-era bathhouse are scheduled for the winter.
The project, set to be completed on July 4, 2025, includes a 10,000-square foot pool with a sloped walk-in “zero-entry,” as well as spray features. It will also include a 10-lane pool, half the size of one of Olympic standard, along with a splash pad. Other features for the new pool include a water slide, shade pavilions, picnic patio and restrooms.
The entire renovation project is expected to cost between $18 million and $20 million, Sheehan said in December.
Along with repairs, contractors plan to install new lockers and other visual enhancements in the historic bathhouse. They also plan to install hundreds of long metal tubes filled with concrete to provide long-lasting stability to the main pool.
Once those features, known as micropiles, are installed, contractors will build pipes, structures and terracing to stabilize its main slope. The work will allow the city to construct another bathhouse into a hill on the site, the mayor’s office said.
The city plans to remove up to five trees as part of the project and replace them with the same species.
A future phase of the project consists of building a playground near the new pool.
