Ualbany, Siena softball off to Texas
Texas earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship when the 64-team field and seeds were announced on Sunday.
Thirty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification as conference champions, while the remaining 32 slots were filled with atlarge selections to complete the bracket.
Regionals will be held May 17-19 with each campus site hosting a fourteam, double-elimination tournament.
The Austin Regional will pit Siena (33-20) against top-seeded Texas (47-7). Also in the four-team tournament are Northwestern (33-11) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (40-12).
Ualbany (33-12) will play in close geographic proximity at the Bryancollege Station Regional, against No. 16 seed Texas A&M (40-13); Texas State (45-13) and Penn State (34-18) will round out the lineup.
The 16 winning teams will advance to the super regionals, to be held May 23-26 in a best-of-three tournament format on eight campus sites. From there, the winners from each super regional will advance to the NCAA Women’s College World Series, May 30 to June 6-7, at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Mcilroy wins 4th Wells Fargo
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rory Mcilroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for a record fourth time Sunday, overcoming a two-stroke deficit top beat Xander Schauffele by five strokes. No other player has won the event more than twice. Mcilroy closed with a 6-under 65, playing the final 11 holes in 6 under even with a double bogey on the 18th hole.
Gotterup tops at Myrtle Beach
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Chris Gotterup won the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 67 for a six-stroke victory at Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The tournament was played opposite the Wells Fargo Championship, a signature event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gotterup got a spot in the PGA Championship next week, but not in the Masters or a guaranteed spot in the remaining two $20 million signature events.
Zhang ends Korda’s win streak
Rose Zhang birdied four of the final five holes to win the Cognizant Founders Cup on Sunday. She beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes while putting an official end to Nelly Korda’s record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak.
Seattle cools hot Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — Raul Ruidiaz scored the go-ahead goal early in the second half and the Seattle Sounders snapped Portland’s six-game undefeated streak in their rivalry series with a 2-1 Cascadia Cup victory over the Timbers on Sunday. Cristian Roldan scored a first-half goal and the Sounders secured just their third win in the regular season’s first 12 matches. Felipe Mora scored for the Timbers, who have not won a match since a 2-1 victory over NYCFC on March 9.
Hawks beat odds, get 1st pick
CHICAGO — The Atlanta Hawks won the NBA draft lottery, landing the No. 1 pick and a potential cornerstone player in a year where there’s no clear-cut choice. The Hawks hit the jackpot despite just 3% odds after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference at 36-46. They dropped their final six regular-season games and lost to the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the play-in tournament. The Hawks haven’t won a postseason series since a surprising run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. They got knocked out in the first round in 2022 and 2023. Washington, Houston, San Antonio and Detroit rounded out the top five. The draft is June 26-27 in Brooklyn.
Barron gets 3rd Champions win
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Doug Barron won the Regions Tradition on Sunday for his third PGA Tour Champions victory and first major title, shooting a 4-under 68 to hold off Steven Alker by two strokes. Barron finished at 17-under 271 at Greystone in the first of the season’s five senior majors.
