Is it true that Naomie Harris, who’s terrific in Moonlight, almost turned down the role? —Danielle D., Miami, Fla.

A: Yes. Harris made a promise to herself at the beginning of her career that she would portray only positive women, like her roles in Spectre and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The London-born actress, 40, felt there were enough stereotypes about black women, so the role of the drug-addicted mother of a young black man struggling to discover his identity in a tough neighborhood in Miami didn’t appeal to her. “I really didn’t want to do it [at first], but I loved the script,” she says. Now Moonlight is gathering steam as a serious Oscar contender.
