Acad­emy Award–win­ning Awa ac­tor Mor­gan Free­man, 80, will be hon­ored with the SAG S Life Achieve­ment Award when the 24th An­nual Screen Ac­tors Guild Awards show airs Jan. 21 on TNT and TBS. Here are five facts abo about the Ten­nessee-born, Mis­sis­sippi-raised star of Driv­ing Miss Daisy, Mil­lion Dol­lar Baby and The Shaw­shank Re­demp­tion, whose ré­sumé in­cludes more than 75 other movies.

1 Free­man’s dream of be­ing a fighter pi­lot led him to en­list in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of air­man 1st class.

2 Gary Cooper Westerns in­spired him to be­come an ac­tor.

3 He co-owns the blues club Ground Zero in Clarks­dale, Miss.

4 After learn­ing that the sur­vival of wild bees was threat­ened, he turned 124 acres of his Mis­sis­sippi prop­erty into a bee sanc­tu­ary that houses 26 hives.
