McKeever Placed On Paid Leave

One of the state’s most successful high school coaches has been put on leave pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged improprieties on a trip with student-athletes in June 2008.

La Cueva baseballcoach Stan McKeever, whose program has won national acclaim, has been the subject of an ongoing investigation regarding an of f-campus incident with at least two of his players last summer in Denver.

He was placed on paid leave by Albuquerque Public Schools on Tuesday.

McKeever did not return phone messages seeking comment on Tuesday but told the Journal late last week, “I’m not going to comment on rumors and innuendo.”

APS director of communica-

tions Monica Armenta said it is the school district’s policy to investigate every allegation that comes to its attention.

“It’s our obligation to do so,” she said.

Such matters are typically handled by detectives within the APS security department, she said.

Armenta declined, however, to offer specifics about McKeever’s case, other than to say the coach is being investigated.

“This is a personnel issue and as a matter of practice we do not comment on personnel issues,” she said.

“There’s an investigation under way and we’re waiting for the results. That’s all I can tell you at this point,” said La Cueva athletics director Larry Waters.

Waters told the Journal that several members of the Bears’ 2009 roster, their parents and administrators at the school have been interviewed by the APS security department in recent days.

He said he wasn’t informed of the alleged incident until last month’s annual North-South All-Star festivities.

Attempts to reach some of the players in question have been unsuccessful.

McKeever has coached La Cueva to five Class 5A state championships this decade, including four straight between 2003 and 2006. He has also had two runner-up finishes with the Bears and one with Del Norte in 1998.

La Cueva has had three winning streaks of at least 20 games the past six years. The 2009 team tied the state record for wins in a single season with 29 — a record it had established in 2003.

Among the program’s more notable accomplishments under McKeever was its 70-game winning streak between 2002 and 2005, at the time a national record.

Under McKeever’s watch the Bears have had several stints in the national rankings, including several weeks as the country’s No. 1 team in 2004. Several of his players have either turned pro or landed Division I scholarships.
