Lo Lovelace cuts
Company Declines To Say Which Facilities Affected
Med Medical provider reduces workforce by 2 percent, but won’t indicate whic which facilities will be affected
Lovelace Health System is cutting about 2 percent of its nearly 4,000-member workforce, the medical provider said Monday in a short statement.
The company declined to provide actual numbers of affected employees or identify what facilities would be affected. But director of economic development for the city of Albuquerque, John Garcia, said he was told by Lovelace that about 70 administrative-type positions were cut.
“Like all organizations, we regularly review our operations to determine the appropriate staffing levels and organizational efficiencies,” Lovelace spokeswoman Laurie Volkin said an emailed statement to the Journal.
“This reduction affected less than 2 percent of the system’s total employed workforce and half include outside contracted positions,” the statement said. “This reduction did not affect direct patient care positions and areas.”
Volkin declined to elaborate further on what was driving the decision.
Lovelace consists of five hospitals in Albuquerque and one in Roswell, the Lovelace Health Plan offering insurance to 230,000 people and 11 retail pharmacies in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe.
The company brought the Heart Hospital of New Mexico into its fold last August, purchasing the facility from MedCath Corp. for $119 million. It announced plans to move cardiac care and equipment that had been in Lovelace Medical Center into the hospital.
