Mitt Doesn’t Get It

MITT ROMNEY has insulted me and millions of Americans. Claiming that Obama supporters are dependent on government, pay no taxes and are looking for a handout, he shows how little he understands ordinary people.

I support Obama, yet I receive Social Security and Medicare benefits for which I paid taxes over my working life. I pay taxes and I’m not looking for a handout.

I am in favor of supporting the 46 million Americans living below the poverty line. Most work hard at low wages. I am in favor of eliminating hunger in the wealthiest nation in the world through food stamps, whose recipients are overwhelmingly children.

I do support our military and their families. They are dependent on government for their income and care while they serve and when killed or injured defending our liberties. I do support our teachers, firefighters and police, who are government employees.

I do support those students who depend on government assistance to complete their educations. That is to America’s long term economic benefit.

These people are not looking for a handout, just a fair chance. Americans who benefit from government assistance are not losers; they are our friends and neighbors, part of a diverse American community that Mitt Romney can’t seem to comprehend. DAVID PRESCOTT Santa Fe
