No. 3 Michigan Goes to 8-0

Georgetown Wins Jimmy V Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Trey Burke had 20 points and seven assists as No. 3 Michigan eased past Western Michigan for a 73-41 victory Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (8-0) had lost their previous two games against the Broncos, but that was more than a decade ago. Western Michigan (6-2) had won six straight coming into this game, including a victory over South Florida, but the Broncos wasted a chance to stay with the Wolverines, turning the ball over 13 times in the first half.

Nik Stauskas scored 11 points for Michigan, and fellow freshman Mitch McGary added 10 on 5-of-5 shooting.

It is Michigan’s first 8-0 start since 1996-97.

No. 5 LOUISVILLE 80, CHARLESTON 38: In Charleston, S.C., Wayne Blackshear had 18 points and Louisville used its stifling defense to take control against College of Charleston.

The Cardinals (7-1) used a 22-7 run midway through the opening half to build a 36-14 lead.

Russ Smith had 13 points and Peyton Siva 12 for Louisville, which turned up its defense at the sold-out TD Arena. The Cardinals finished with a season-high 18 steals and forced Charleston (5-3) into a season-high 27 turnovers, 11 more than it had averaged coming in.

No. 8 ARIZONA 63, SOUTHERN MISS 55: In Tucson, Nick Johnson scored 23 points, Kevin Parrom had 13 of his 14 in the second half and Arizona overcame a seasonhigh 27 turnovers to hold off Southern Mississipp­i.

Arizona (6- 0) struggled against Southern Miss’ zone defense, throwing passes into traffic and to open spaces, even one that sailed over the coaches on the bench into the crowd.

The Wildcats hung on behind their defense, forcing Southern Miss (6-2) into 17 second-half turnovers to pull away to their best start since opening the 1999-2000 season with six straight wins.

No. 12 MISSOURI 81, SE MISSOURI STATE 65: In Columbia, Mo., Laurence Bowers scored a career-high 26 points to help the Tigers rally from 10 points down at halftime and beat Southeast Missouri State.

The Tigers (7-1) trailed for 17 minutes before Bowers made a turnaround jumper to give Missouri a 57-56 lead with 10:56 remaining, then stretched the lead to 73-62 with 4:16 left on an alley-oop dunk by Keion Bell.

No. 13 ILLINOIS 72, WESTERN CAROLINA 64: In Champaign, Ill., Brandon Paul scored 14 points and Illinois (9-0) earned a win over Western Carolina.

Western Carolina tied the game at 54-54 with 5:53 left.

Illinois guard D.J. Richardson finished with 13 points.

Guard Preston Ross paced the Catamounts (3-6) with 17 points. James Sinclair added 13 points and eight rebounds. Guard Brandon Boggs added 16 points off the bench.

No. 14 MINNESOTA 88, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 64: In Minneapoli­s, Andre Hollins scored 20 of his 22 points before halftime as Minnesota breezed to a victory over a South Dakota State team missing point guard Nate Wolters.

Hollins swished his first six 3-point attempts and finished 8-for-9 from the field for the Gophers (9-1), who reached their highest ranking in The Associated Press poll this week in six years under coach Tubby Smith.

Jordan Dykstra scored 17 points for the Jackrabbit­s (6-3).

No. 15 GEORGETOWN 64, TEXAS 41: In New York, Otto Porter had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead Georgetown (6-1) to a victory over Texas (5-3) in the opener of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

No. 25 NORTH CAROLINA STATE 69, CONNECTICU­T 65: In New York, Richard Howell had 13 points and grabbed all 10 of his rebounds in the second half, and C.J. Leslie had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead North Carolina State (5-2) to a victory over Connecticu­t (6-2) in the second game of the Jimmy V Classic.

No. 21 UNLV 68, PORTLAND 60: In Portland, Ore., Justin Hawkins had 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in a second-half rally that put UNLV (6-1) in front, and the Runnin’ Rebels defeated tenacious Portland (3-5).

Anthony Bennett had 18 points and Anthony Marshall added 16 for UNLV.

PACIFIC 78, NEVADA 72 (OT): In Stockton, Calif., Lorenzo McCloud scored 24 points as Pacific (4-4) defeated Nevada (4-4) in overtime.

Deonte Burton led the Wolf Pack with 25 points.

WYOMING 81, ILLINOIS STATE 67: In Normal, Ill., Larry Nance Jr. scored 19 points and the Cowboys ran their winning streak to nine with a comeback win over Illinois State (5-3).

Women

No. 6 GEORGIA 80, MERCER 38: In Athens, Ga., Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James and Erika Ford scored 12 points each to lead Georgia to a victory over Mercer.

Khaalidah Miller added 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who are 10-0 for the eighth time in program history.

Kendra Grant led Mercer (4-3) with 16 points, making seven of the Bears’ 15 shots from the field.

NORTH DAKOTA 76, AIR FORCE 42: In Grand Forks, N.D., sophomore Simonne Potts scored a career-high 13 points, but the Air Force (0-8) dropped a contest to North Dakota.

Seniors Katie Hilbig and Alicia Leipprandt added nine points each for the Falcons, while Hilbig also had a teamhigh eight rebounds.
