Bosque Trail Closed For Repairs
Detour planned around work, which will take four months
Runners, walkers and cyclists who use a section of the Rio Grande Bosque Trail south of Tingley Beach will have to make detours over the next few months as construction progresses on a project to smooth and realign the popular route.
Work starting Friday on the first phase of the project will mean the closure of the trail between Tingley Drive and Bridge Boulevard.
Construction on the first phase is expected to take until Dec. 18. During that time, trail users can use a detour along Eighth Street. The section of trail between Bridge and Rio Bravo will remain open, said Bernalillo County project engineer Jeanne Wolfenbarger.
The $1 million project will involve overhauling a five-mile portion of the trail south to the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority’s South Diversion channel. Construction activity is expected to take about four months.
Last year, Albuquerque rehabilitated the nearly 11-mile stretch of bosque trail from
Alameda Boulevard to near Bridge that was built in 1994.
The county developed the southern portion of trail in 1998.
That section, close to wooded areas and irrigated farmland, is currently marred by numerous bumps, cracks and pockets of erosion.
The project will replace parts of the trail with stronger paving, realign areas to avoid erosion, add benches and improve gate access.
As work progresses, updated information on trail closures and detours will be posted on the county website at www.bernco.gov/bosquetrail.
