BUDDY WITH BIDEN?

It seems as though Gov. Susana Martinez and Vice President Joe Biden may be unlikely friends. She’s going to Washington for a Cinco de Mayo celebration at his house.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden appear to have struck up an unlikely friendship.

After receiving an invitation from Biden, the first-term Republican governor will travel to Washington, D.C., today to attend a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the vice president’s residence, the Governor’s Office said Wednesday.

The trip comes less than two months after Martinez traveled to Rome for Pope Francis’ inaugural Mass as part of an official U.S. delegation led by Biden.

Martinez, the nation’s first elected Hispanic female governor, said she was honored to accept Biden’s latest invitation.

“I think it speaks well for our ability to build relationships in spite of the fact that he is a Democrat and I am a Republican,” she told reporters Wednesday.

The travel qualifies as a state trip, meaning it will be paid for by taxpayers, Martinez spokesman Enrique Knell said.

The governor is scheduled to return to New Mexico on Friday.

MASTERFUL BILL: Former Gov. Bill Richardson is making his return to the literary world.

Richardson, a Democrat who left office in 2010, is authoring a book that will detail his experience negotiating with various foreign leaders and dictators.

The book is slated to be titled “How to Sweet Talk a Shark: Strategies and Stories From a Master Negotiator” and will come out this fall, according to the Pennsylvania-based publisher that acquired its rights.

A former congressman from New Mexico, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary before being elected governor, Richardson has traveled to Cuba, Sudan, North Korea and Iraq to negotiate the release of American hostages.

He said in a statement promoting the book that the tactics used to negotiate with the likes of Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro can be applied to “colleagues, in-laws, spouses and pretty much anyone proving to be less than reasonable.”

Richardson’s latest literary effort comes after the 2005 release of his first book, a memoir titled “Between Two Worlds.” He also penned the 2007 book “Leading By Example.”

The new book is being coauthored with Kevin Bleyer, who has worked as a writer for “The Daily Show with John Stewart.”
