Reports of overwhelming majority against guns wrong

Look at all of poll before deciding where Americans stand

- By Edward Glenn Albuquerque resident

If we want to debate the issue of gun control, then we should base the discussion on facts. Instead, we have a president, along with liberal lawmakers and a complicit national media, using deceptive language and distorted poll results trying to convince us that 90 percent of Americans want to do away with gun-ownership.

The fact is, most Americans favor gun ownership, and are resistant to more gun laws, especially when the current laws aren’t being enforced. The 90 percent approval statistic being bandied about is false and misleading. What you’re not being told is the wording of the poll, as well as the other questions asked, and their results. The Washington PostABC poll of March 7-10 of 1,000 adults, asked the following:

“Would you support, or oppose, a law requiring background checks on people buying guns at gun shows?” — 91 percent were in favor.

The question wasn’t if people supported gun-control, only if they supported background checks at gun shows.

Most Americans support background checks to prevent the wrong people from buying a gun, and even the NRA came out in support of this. We already have background checks at gun stores, so adding gun shows isn’t a stretch.

Going too far, however, was the provision that everyone had to have a background check, including friends and family members. The poll also asked: “Would you support, or oppose, a law making illegal gun sales a federal crime?” — 82 percent were in favor.

Of course they were. Why? Because illegal guns sales already are a federal crime!

It’s illegal to knowingly sell a gun to someone who isn’t allowed to own a gun, or who intends to transfer the gun to someone else.

Perhaps the media could have spent a moment reflecting on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who probably was aware of 2,550 such illegal sales to the Mexican drug cartels. But, I guess the head of the Justice Department committing thousands of felonies doesn’t help with the gun-control debate very much.

Another question begins to shed a little more transparency on American views:

“Do you favor, or oppose, stricter gun control laws in this country?” — Only 52 percent were in favor.

That’s not 90 percent of Americans supporting gun control. Still, that is more than half of the respondents, meaning a slim majority of Americans favor more guncontrol, right?

Wrong. Because here’s the result to another question:

“Do you, or anyone in your home, own a gun?” — 42 percent said yes, and 57 percent said no.

This illustrates how the poll was “stacked” by having a higher ratio of non-gun owners vs. gun owners.

One more question that didn’t see the light of day:

“Would you support, or oppose, a law requiring placing an armed guard in every school in the country?” — 50 percent were in favor, and 48 percent were opposed.

So, despite a blatant bias in the ratio of gun owners being polled, the only thing we’re being told is that 90 percent of Americans want to get rid of guns, and the dirty-sneaky NRA and evil Republicans have stymied the efforts of the truly pure and noble president.

Awful, isn’t it? Any questions?
