SPORTS SPEAK UP!

I PLAY A FAIR amount of golf — 100+ rounds a year, though at this point virtually never at Ladera — and I believe I am entitled to an opinion from experience. The city’s golf management division needs to get over its Ladera fantasy, needs to stop throwing good money after bad with the bond issues — that golfers have to pay back via increasing greens fees. Ladera’s condition has gone further and further downhill since I started playing (at least 15 years ago) despite all that’s been spent on it, including the unnecessary clubhouse. It’s not “coming back,” ever. I’m sorry to be so harsh, but face reality and find another plan that doesn’t require additional debt loaded on to the golfers, since the courses are designed to be self-supporting.

JOSEPH, SAN JOSE ST. and Utah St., are on TV more than UNM because they both had winning seasons last year, and if I’m not mistaken went to bowl games. UNM hasn’t had a winning season in 5 years. You earn your way on TV by winning games. Besides, the Harvard debacle in basketball and the shellacking by Texas Tech in baseball show that whenever UNM gets on TV, it develops a lack of bowel control. Sincerely,

I HOPE THAT the writer to Sports Speak Up enjoys watching Utah State and San Jose State play football on national TV this coming season. Personally, I don’t know of anyone in New Mexico that shares your interest. He/she ended their comments with the following: “There’s a very simple answer to being on TV. It’s called winning!” I guess that explains why, thus far, Colorado State with a record last year of 4-8 will be on national TV 5 times, Hawaii (3-9, with a loss at home to UNM) will make 3 appearances and even UNLV (2-11) will double up the Lobos with 2 appearances. Perhaps the administrators at these other schools did a better job than those at UNM of lobbying the conference and television networks to get their teams nationally televised multiple times?

RE THE EDITORIALS in today’s (Saturday) paper: The first editorial questions Bernalillo County commissioners’ vote to raise the minimum wage to $8.50. The second editorial praises UNM’s decision to extend by two years football coach Davie’s contract. Seems to me big sports takes priority over the average worker trying to make ends meet. Does anyone else see a problem with this?
