IN THE SADDLE

For other mothers and daughters who love horses, but don’t have a relative with a stable, Harrold Grantham of Broken Saddle Riding Company in Cerrillos says he has plenty of horses looking for riders.

“There’s something about girls and horses. If it wasn’t for girls riding horses, we wouldn’t make a living,” Grantham says.

He says it’s an activity both can share: “It’s low-tech. Not much has changed about riding a horse in the past 20 years. It can be a wonderful bonding experience.”

He caters to all levels of riding ability and keeps trail parties to five people. Rates begin at $55 an hour; for information visit http://www. brokensaddle.com.

TAKE A JAUNT

Raeanna Griffis, manager of Scoot Over Albuquerque, on East Central, a little west of Nob Hill, says renting a couple of motor scooters is a great way to shop Nob Hill or Old Town or just take in the sights for an afternoon.

“We see lots of daughters and their mothers,” Griffis says.

She’s happy to give a little tutorial, but she says riding a scooter is easy. People with a valid driver’s license can operate a scooter. They don’t exceed 35 miles an hour and get 100 miles to a gallon of gas. Prices are $49 for an half a day.

MAKING JEWELRY

Tiffany Garcia, a longtime employee at Stone Mountain Bead Gallery on Central in Nob Hill, says she sees many mothers and daughters.

The store sometimes offers classes but she adds that anyone trying something new can work in the store for support and guidance: “They can sit down in the store and bead. We’ll set them up.”

TAKE TEA

Mothers and daughters can find quiet time at the St. James Tearoom on Edith and Osuna NE, says owner Mary Alice Higbie. The tearoom features two-hour seating times for a leisurely repast, complete with finery, like hats and gloves, to borrow.

“I think the reason they enjoy it is because mothers and daughters get a chance to be girls together. We have quiet surroundings and an intimate atmosphere so they can connect on a deeper level,” Higbie says. Tea for adults is about $34. Reservations are required, visit http:// www.stjamestearoom.com.

TAKE SPA TIME

In Albuquerque, Elissa Breitbard, owner of Betty’s Bath and Day Spa on Candelaria NW, says she sees mothers and daughters at the spa together as often as she sees couples.

The Betty’s hour massage, $75, is the most requested, but the spa has an entire menu, from facials to feet treats, Breitbard says. Each treatment comes with a soak and a sit in the spa’s outdoor hot tubs and saunas. For information, visit www. bettysbath.com.

“A lot of locals bring their daughters or mothers, whoever is visiting, to Betty’s,” she says. “It warms my heart.”
