LOBO RECAP
Flashback: In Fort Collins, Colo., the 21stranked Colorado State Rams put up 51 points in the second and third quarters on Saturday en route to a seemingly effortless, 58-20 bashing of the error-prone and overmatched New Mexico Lobos.
What went right: Well, not much. The Lobos (3-8 overall, 1-6 in Mountain West Conference play) did have some good moments on offense, finishing with 301 yards rushing — surpassing the 300 mark on the ground for the sixth time this season. Running back Jhurell Pressley, playing with a sprained ankle, broke runs of 66 and 26 yards, both setting up second-half touchdowns. As a team, UNM averaged 7.5 yards per carry.
What went wrong: Two fumbles on kickoff returns by Ridge Jones and two interceptions thrown by quarterback Lamar Jordan provided the Rams with help they obviously didn’t need. New Mexico could stop neither the run nor the pass, as CSU finished with a program-record 698 yards of total offense. For the second year in a row, a Colorado State running back scored six touchdowns against New Mexico — last year Kapri Bibbs, this year Dee Hart. Jordan was 3-of-11 passing for 55 yards, with those two interceptions.
Injury report: Starting nose tackle William Udeh left the game in the first quarter with an apparent leg/ankle injury and did not return.
Quoting Davie: “I look at it like it’s one step more of valuable experience for some young guys. But, certainly, it’s humbling. It’s humbling to stand there and take that.”
Next Up: The Wyoming Cowboys (4-7, 2-5) come to University Stadium on Saturday. Like the Lobos, the Cowboys will be coming off a game they’d like to forget — a 63-14 pounding by Boise State — hoping to finish the season with a victory to remember.
