Prep teammates lead streaking Aggies

- JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRES

Sasha Weber was expected to be an AllWestern Athletic Conference player, and she certainly has delivered for the New Mexico State women’s basketball team. But the emergence of two former high school teammates has contributed to the 12-6 Aggies’ eight-game win streak and 5-0 start in conference play.

Junior college transfer point guard Shanice Davis and sophomore forward Brianna Freeman are also putting up all-league numbers as the Aggies play today at UT-Pan American(11-9, 4-1) in a battle for first place.

They are three years removed from pairing up to go 35-2 at Harker Heights High in Texas.

“I was excited, even before coaches brought (Davis) in because they were asking about her,” Freeman, one year behind Davis in high school, told the Las Cruces Sun-News. “I loved playing with her. She plays hard and passes the ball to the open man.”

Aggies assistants discovered Davis while recruiting Kassandra Harris at a regional tournament. Davis had 30 points for McLen- nan Community College in a game.

“Her point scoring is just a bonus,” said Aggies associate head coach Tamara Inoue said. “Her assist-to-turnover ratio has been great and it’s the steals and defense and leadership. Within the first month, her teammates were picking her as a captain.”

Davis is fourth in the WAC in scoring (13.4 points per game), third in assists (4.6 per game) and first in steals (2.28 per game). Freeman is 11th in the WAC in scoring (11.3 points per game), seventh in rebounding (6.5 per game) and first in field goal percentage (54.7 percent).

MEN: New Mexico State (12-10, 4-1) puts its WAC lead on the line when it hosts UTPA (8-13, 2-3) tonight. The Aggies have won 24 straight WAC home games.
