Cibola girls hoops team runs its record to 17-1

Snow postpones Hawks vs. Santa Fe

Cibola High’s girls basketball team improved to 17-1 this season with a 61-36 victory at Cleveland on Friday night.

Amaya Brown had 15 points, Kristin Dearth 12 and Tianna Guillory 10 for the Cougars, who are 3-0 in District 1-6A.

Katie Howerton led the Storm (7-14, 0-3) with 10 points.

Two other Rio West teams were snowed out Friday. Games between Volcano Vista and Santa Fe were postponed. The boys were reschedule­d for tonight at Volcano Vista, while the girls were reschedule­d for Monday in Santa Fe.

THURSDAY: Cleveland’s boys rallied in the fourth quarter and eventually won in overtime, 60-55 at Cibola in a District 1-6A contest.

West Mesa’s boys got past Atrisco Heritage 61-56, with Zack Schroer leading the Mustangs with 17 points.

St. Pius’ boys beat Valencia 56-43 in a nondistric­t game.

Valley’s girls and St. Pius’ girls lost on Thursday. The Vikings were beaten 47-42 by Sandia, while Hope Christian took care of the Sartans 53-38. Both were nondistric­t games.

WEDNESDAY: Cibola’s girls beat Rio Rancho 37-29 in District 1-6A, while Valley’s girls dropped a 49-43 decision to Albuquerqu­e High in a matchup of leaders in 5-6A.

TUESDAY: Cleveland and Rio Rancho had wins in District 1-6A boys action. The Storm held off Volcano Vista 54-50 behind 17 points from Ryan Jones, while the Rams staved off a Cibola rally for a key 61-60 road win.

At Albuquerqu­e High, Valley’s boys beat the Bulldogs 64-56 to improve to 3-0 in District 5-6A. Freshman point guard Anthony Chavez had a team-best 24 points for the Vikings.

In a nondistric­t game, St. Pius downed West Mesa 48-38; the 12-3 Sartans got 12 points from Nathan Peterson in the win.

Volcano Vista’s girls defeated Cleveland 39-35, with Deezha Battle and Raven Herrera combining for all but 10 of the Hawks’ points.

Also Tuesday, La Cueva’s girls belted St. Pius 72-45.

Swimming/diving

Cibola’s boys had the highest local team finish at last week’s Albuquerqu­e Metro Championsh­ips at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.

Eldorado was the meet champion, followed by La Cueva and Sandia.

The Cougars, last year’s state champ, placed fourth. Rio Rancho was fifth, Cleveland seventh, Volcano Vista eighth, Bosque School ninth, Valley 10th and West Mesa 14th.

Many of the events were won by local swimmers.

Top individual finishes included:

Cibola’s Jacob Harlan was a double champion, in the 200yard freestyle (1 minute, 44.33 seconds) and also the 500 free (a meet-record 4:45.30). Cleveland’s Jacob Wemhoner was fourth in the 500 free.

Rio Rancho’s Ben Lafler captured the 100-yard backstroke in 54.18 seconds, and he also swam fourth in the 200 free.

Cibola’s Tameryn Huffman was the winner of the 200 IM in a time of 1:59.00, while teammate Joshua Harlan was third. Huffman also was third in the 100 backstroke, and Harlan added a fourth-place showing in the 100 back.

Cibola’s Magnus Holler, like Jacob Harlan, also won two events. He took first in the 50 free in a meet-record 20.87 seconds and also won the 100 free in 45.33 seconds.

Valley’s Isaac Morris was the 1-meter diving champion, followed by Rio Rancho’s Joshua Espinoza (who later took fourth in the 100 free) and Cleveland’s Bradley Smith in the standings.

The Rams’ Trinity Medley won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.99 seconds, and swam second to Lafler in the 100 backstroke.

In the 100 breaststro­ke, Rio Rancho’s Dylan Gustafson finished second, Cleveland’s Chris Mooty fourth.

Cibola won a pair of relays: the 200-yard free relay team of Huffman, Joshua Harlan, Taylor Atencio and Holler; and the 400-free relay squad, consisting of Holler, Jacob Harlan, Huffman and Stephen Duckett.

Rio Rancho’s 200-yard medley relay team of Lafler, Gustafson, Medley and Espinoza won the race in a time of 1:40.16.

Wrestling

For the first time all season, Rio Rancho and Cleveland matchup against all the top Albuquerqu­e programs as the Albuquerqu­e Metro Championsh­ips conclude tonight at Eldorado.

The finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Cibola, St. Pius, Valley, Volcano Vista and West Mesa are also in the field.

Later next week, Rio Rancho and Cleveland meet in a dual match, on Thursday night at Cleveland.

Rio Rancho last weekend placed fourth at the Top of the Rockies tournament in Lafayette, Colo., led by Orlando Gutierrez, who won his bracket at 145 pounds, and Miguel Barreras, the 160-pound champion.

Other placers for the Rams included Javier Salazar (third at 120 pounds) and Ryan Rochford (fourth at 132).
