PREP BASKETBALL: GAMES TO WATCH

- — James Yodice

MONDAY: Two defending girls state champions, Volcano Vista (11-8, 2-1) and Santa Fe (14-5, 2-0), meet in a rescheduled game on the Demonettes’ floor. These are now District 1-6A rivals.

TUESDAY: The top matchup of the night — and, potentially, one of the best games of the week — is at Cleveland, where the Storm boys (20-1, 3-0 in 1-6A) play host to secondplace Rio Rancho (16-5, 2-1).

District 5-5A boys activity finally gets underway with Grants (13-5) at Albuquerque Academy (7-11) and St. Pius (13-3) at Moriarty (3-15).

WEDNESDAY: District 5-6A boys is back on the court, with Albuquerque High (17-2, 2-1) visiting West Mesa (13-6, 2-1) and Rio Grande (8-11, 0-3) at Valley (11-8, 3-0). This night could prove especially crucial to the Bulldogs or Mustangs, both of whom are trying to keep pace with the leagueleading Vikings.

In District 2-6A, Sandia’s boys (10-9, 3-0) play host to second-place La Cueva (7-12, 2-1). The Matadors are riding a six-game winning streak; the most recent of those was a resounding and impressive win over Valley.

THURSDAY: St. Pius’ boys have been flying so far under the radar that they’d have to poke their heads above ground to be detected. The Sartans, ranked fourth in Class 5A, have a District 5-5A showdown on the West Side with their BFFs from Academy.

FRIDAY: With La Cueva dominating, second place in District 2-6A girls basketball is going to come down to Sandia (8-11, 2-1) or Eldorado (9-10, 2-1). The two meet at Sandia.

Plenty of interesting games on this night, however. That includes Bernalillo’s boys (128, 1-1) getting a rematch with Del Norte (13-5, 3-0) in District 2-5A; the Knights won on a late shot in their first meeting two weeks ago.

Also West Mesa’s boys are at Valley, Cibola’s girls (17-1, 3-0 in 1-5A) at home to Volcano Vista, and Cibola’s boys (11-8, 1-2 in 1-6A) at Volcano Vista (12-7, 1-2).
