Lawyer to talk about diary by Gitmo detainee
Albuquerque civil rights attorney was a contributor and will speak at Bookworks
Albuquerque civil rights attorney Nancy Hollander will talk about “Guantanamo Diary,” the first diary from a Guantanamo detainee, to which she contributed, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Albuquerque Academy’s Little Theater, 6400 Wyoming NE. The event, sponsored by Bookworks, is free to the public.
At Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande NW, Irv Weinberg will sign his new thriller, “The Suicide Sell,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4. In it, the author and advertising professional gives a new twist to the old dilemma of overpopulation.
Jennifer Noyer will talk about and sign her book “Plateye” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. In it the mythical figure of Plateye appears in the folklore of the southern United States as a kind of demon who searches out human weaknesses and terrifies his victim.
BOOK WORKSHOP: Four local authors will speak about their books and the inspiration behind them from 3-5 p.m. Feb. 15 at Congregation Albert’s Rabbi David D. Shor Library, 3800 Louisiana NE. The writers participating are Janet Eigner, Mary E. Carter, Stacy L. Cooley and Lois Ruby. The authors each will speak and respond to questions. The event is free and refreshments will be served. AT PAGE ONE: Catherine Dowling, a psychotherapist who grew up in Ireland, will be at Page One Bookstore at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 8 to talk about her nonfiction effort, “Radical Awareness: 5 Practices for a Fully Engaged Life.”

IN PLACITAS: The Placitas Community Library will present author Mary E. Carter at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, for a book signing and discussion of her book “A Non-Swimmer Considers Her Mikvah: On Becoming Jewish After Fifty.” The event will be held in the library’s Collin Meeting Room and there is no admission fee. Carter, who became Jewish after 50, tells her story in the book. The library is at 453 Hwy. 165, five miles east of Interstate 25 off exit 242.
AT UNM BOOKSTORE: Professors from the University of New Mexico School of Architecture & Planning will appear for book signings at noon Thursday, Feb. 5, at the UNM Bookstore. The professor-authors are Eleni Bastéa, Mark Childs, John Quale, Levi Romero, Alfred Simon, Chris Wilson and Baker Morrow. The event is free to the public. Among the titles are Bastéa’s “Venice without Gondolas,” a book of poetry, and Childs’ “Urban Composition.”
Also at the UNM Bookstore, Gene Lessard will sign his book “Grandfather’s Tale: The Story of Human Evolution and Dispersal” from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4.
