VAN GOGH IN LOVE

Play tells the story of an intense passion

-

In 1873, the young Vincent Van Gogh moved to London’s Brixton neighborhood, where he rented a room in a boardinghouse. There he falls in love with an older woman, Ursula Loyer.

This May/December romance eventually will lead him onto the road of artistic genius and the unique vision expressed in his subject matter of the working class and poor.

“Vincent in Brixton” by playwright Nicholas Wright will open tonight at the Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill with what director Victoria Liberatori calls “a beautiful script and cast.”

Loyer was a widow and much older than Van Gogh. For the latter is a love affair of intense passion as expressed in his own words: “Since the beginning of this love I have felt that unless I gave myself up to it entirely, without any restriction, with all my heart, there was no chance for me whatever, and even so my chance is slight.”

“Vincent in Brixton” won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play.

Micah McCoy portrays Van Gogh and Bridget Kelly is Ursula Loyer. McCoy has acted in Albuquerque theater for six years, including recent roles in productions of “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” and “Jerusalem,” both at the Vortex Theatre. He is an awardwinning playwright whose work has been performed in several states.

Kelly marks her first role at Aux Dog. Her recent stage work includes Mother Road Theatre Company’s “The Last Night in Ballyhoo” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” as well as FUSION Theatre Company’s “August: O’Sage County.”
