Dallas police suspend Talib assault investigation

Manziel apologizes after stay in rehab

- FROM JOURNAL WIRES 49ERS:

The Dallas Police Department says it is suspending its investigation into an alleged aggravated assault involving Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib and his older brother Yaqub.

The alleged incident took place around 2:09 a.m. April 8 at LUXX Nightclub in downtown Dallas.

Someone called 911 and reported an “active shooter.” When police arrived, a 24-year-old club employee said three men had gotten into a fight, which he tried to break up. He told police they tried to punch him, he tried to kick them, which eventually led to everyone getting tossed, at which point “someone produced a gun and pointed it at” the employee.

“Witnesses outside the location observed a black male outside fire a round into the air, which caused an immediate panic,” police said in a press release. “All of the involved individuals left the location.” WFAA reported that Dallas police then tracked them and towed their cars — a Jaguar and a Range Rover — looking for evidence.

Dallas police have never named the three suspects allegedly involved in the LUXX dust-up. But DPD sources and club management have identified Aqib and Yaqub as having been involved in the alleged tussle with a third man that led to their ouster and allegations they “pointed handguns” at the club worker. Police sources have also said the third man was an NFL player, but he has never been identified.

BROWNS: Quarterback Johnny Manziel has expressed remorse and asked for privacy following a 10-week stay in rehab.

In his first public comments since he entered a treatment facility Jan. 28, Manziel apologized to the Browns and their fans and acknowledged he has a long way to go to win back people’s respect.

“I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down,” Manziel said in the statement released Friday by the Browns. “I take full responsibility for my actions and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect. I understand that will take time and will only happen through what I do and not what I say.”

Manziel thanked doctors and staff at Caron, a Pennsylvania facility which specializes in the treatment of drugs and alcohol. Manziel was discharged on April 11 and has not publicly disclosed what he sought treatment for.

Manziel was allowed to leave the facility during his stay and he played golf in Louisiana with his father and visited patients in a hospital as part of his program. Since leaving Caron, he has attended a Texas Rangers game followed by a visit to see the Dallas Mavericks play.

Fullback Bruce Miller is not taking part in the team’s offseason program at team headquarters in the aftermath of his March arrest on suspicion of spousal battery.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Friday he met about the offseason with Miller, who is “home in Georgia taking care of business.” The Santa Clara District Attorney’s office is still reviewing the case and no court hearing has been scheduled.

The 27-year-old Miller, who received a three-year contract extension in 2014, was arrested March 5.
