HUSKIES LOOK TO BETTER LAST SEASON’S WIN TOTAL

Quarterback seeks to be first from school to get D-I football scholarship

Caleb Meyer-Hagen would love to change a few outside perceptions this season — concerning both his Hope Christian football team and himself.

Meye r - Hagen is a multitalented senior quarterback who will be counted upon to help elevate Hope’s fortunes after a 2-8 season in 2014. He’s also hoping to become the first player from his school to secure a Division I football scholarship.

Asked what it would take for the youthful Huskies to make a legitimate postseason push this season, Meyer-Hagen did not hesitate.

“I think we need to get a little tougher,” he said. “People see us a soft private school. We need to be the aggressors and hit some people first if we’re going to change that.”

Hope coach Gary Beck, entering his first full season after serving as interim coach for the final five games of last season, believes Meyer-Hagen is the perfect person to inject a little toughness into the Huskies’ collective mindset.

“He’s going to give us a shot to win games,” Beck said. “Caleb’s a gifted athlete with a great arm, good size, and he’s really fast. He’ll keep defenses honest because he’s a threat to run it on every play.”

Meyer-Hagen competed in the Nike Elite Camp in Eugene, Ore., this summer and feels the experience will make him that much stronger. He’s talking to a number of schools, including New Mexico. Meyer-Hagen is up for playing wide receiver in college and hopes he’ll get a chance to catch a few passes this season.

“The biggest thing is to help the team win,” he said, “but I’m hoping for about 30 touchdown passes and 20 rushing touchdowns.”
