PB&J FAMILY SERVICES is a New Mexico child-abuse prevention and treatment program that works with the entire family, in their home and with their children. PB&J’s stated mission is to “help at-risk children to grow and develop to their full potential in nurturing families within a supportive community.” PB&J has been serving incarcerated parents since 1988, providing a full range of programming to New Mexico’s incarcerated parents and their children.
Angie Vachio and Christine Ruiz-Boyd co-founded PB&J in 1972 to response to what they perceived as “screaming community needs.” What began as a volunteer effort reaching out to seven children who all had mothers with mental illness, it grew into a nationally recognized nonprofit serving more than 1,100 families annually.
PB&J programs include: Classroom Based Programs — Therapeutic Preschools and the New Mexico PreK Extended Day Program; Home and Community Based Services — New Mexico Home Visiting, Supported Living, Time Limited Reunification (TLR), Family Support Services (FSS), In-Home Services (IHS), Pathways and Mas Papas; and Families Impacted by Incarceration — Fatherhood Re-Entry Program & Fathers Building Futures, “Heeling Hearts,” Parent Re-Entry Program, Metropolitan Detention Center Program, Juvenile Community Corrections Program (JCC) and the Youth Development Inc. (YDI) — Face Forward Parenting Class.
