Now is a good time to start removing basal suckers from fruit and flowering trees. These are the guys that pop up just above or below the soil line around the trunks of these trees. If they can be pulled off, great. If not, cut them off as close to the trunk as possible.

Start looking at your trees. If you see branches that are obviously growing across or into the crown of your tree, remove them. Also look for any suckers that appear to be growing from below the graft on top grafted trees like weeping cherries and remove them as well.
