CLASSIC SPIELBERG

KiMo Theatre film series features some of director’s biggest hits

- Journal Staff Report

The KiMo Theatre is honoring director Steven Spielberg with a film series titled “Spielberg Classics,” with screenings of “Jaws” at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.

This Spielberg classic kept many people out of the water at beaches around the world and caused many otherwise stoic people to scream out loud at certain scenes in the film.

The film is set in summer on Amity Island, a small community whose main income is its beaches.

When new Sheriff Martin Brody, played by Roy Scheider, finds the remains of the victim of a shark attack, his first inclination is to close the beaches, but the town’s mayor strongly objects. Then a young boy is killed by the great white shark that has moved close to shore.

A public panic leads to all sorts of “shark hunters” who descend upon the small town. But local fisherman Quint, played by Robert Shaw, offers to hunt the creature down — for a hefty fee. Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss, a young man from the Oceanographic Institute, joins the team, and they head out to sea. It is soon clear that they are going to need a bigger boat.

Then on Jan. 23 there will be two screenings of 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen.

On Jan. 29, there will be two screenings of the 1993 blockbuster “Jurassic Park,” starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sir Richard Attenborough.

Based on a Michael Crichton novel, the film thrilled audiences with the depiction of highly technical and almost lifelike dinosaurs as they threatened the lives of the vulnerable humans on the island. The terrifying T. Rex animatronic stood and was 40 feet long.

General admission for each screening is $6-8. Tickets are available at kimotickets.com or at 768-3544. The KiMo is at 423 W. Central.
