Fatal crash
3 die when car flies over an arroyo in Albuquerque and lands on a golf course
Three people were killed and two seriously injured when a car they were in flew over a northeast Albuquerque arroyo and landed on a golf course early Friday morning.
Police said the driver was speeding, but they haven’t released any other information about what might have caused the crash. A car carry- ing five people was speeding north on Pennsylvania toward Osuna some time before 3 a.m. Friday, said police spokesman Fred Duran. Pennsylvania becomes a dead end at that intersection, and drivers are forced to either turn left or right.
The speeding driver apparently didn’t do that.
“As the vehicle approached Osuna Road, the driver failed to stop or slow down at the intersection,” Duran said in an email.
The car hurtled over the arroyo and onto Arroyo Del Oso golf course. Multiple people were ejected, Duran said.
Three people died, one of whom was the driver, Duran said. Two others were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.
Police haven’t identified those who died or those who were injured, saying family still needs to be notified.
And they haven’t said if the driver was under the influence while driving.
“Speed is a major factor in the crash, and alcohol has yet to be determined,” Duran said.
The intersection was closed for hours and reopened later in the morning.
