RR woman gets 2 years for ID theft
RIO RANCHO — A Rio Rancho woman was sentenced to two years in prison followed by a year of supervised release for her conviction on identity theft, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
Amber Hilton, who was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque, was also ordered to pay $5,260 in restitution to the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office news release states.
Hilton was initially indicted in November 2014. A superseding indictment filed in February 2015 charged Hilton with attempt to defraud Wells Fargo Bank by attempting to cash two checks that had been altered to reflect a stolen identity on Sept. 7, 2014, in Bernalillo County; identity theft on Sept. 7, 2014, in Bernalillo County; attempted use of a Best Buy credit card on Sept. 24, 2014, in Doña Ana County; attempted use of a Home Depot credit card on Sept. 25, 2014, in Sandoval County; attempted use of a Home Depot credit card on Sept. 26, 2014, in Bernalillo County; aggravated identity theft on Sept. 26, 2014, in Bernalillo County; and possession of a counterfeit U.S. Postal Service key to a lock box for the purpose of mail theft on Oct. 14, 2014, in Sandoval County, the news release reads.
In August 2015, Hilton pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and admitted that, on Oct. 10, 2014, in Bernalillo County, she attempted to use a Home Depot credit card and tried to obtain more than $1,000 with the credit card. Hilton also admitted that she possessed identification of another person in relation to the attempted credit card fraud, according to the release.
