Aggies romp past Utah Valley; Nos. 1-2 are toppled

LAS CRUCES — Pascal Siakam scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as New Mexico State romped past Utah Valley, 98-74, on Saturday night to remain in firstplace in the Western Athletic Conference.

The victory keeps the Aggies (16-8, 8-1) one game ahead of Grand Canyon.

New Mexico State got off to a fast start behind Siakam, who scored six points in the first three minutes to stake the Aggies to an 11-0 lead. After Eli Chuha hit a layup with 2 seconds left in the first half, New Mexico State had a 57-32 advantage. Ian Baker pushed the lead to 60-32 on a 3-pointer less than a minute into the second half. Siakam was 11 of 18 from the field. Jalyn Pennie added 16 points for New Mexico State.

Marcel Davis scored 21 to lead Utah Valley (10-14, 4-5).

New Mexico State returns to action Monday at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho vs. Northern New Mexico College. Game time is 7 p.m.

KANSAS STATE 80, No. 1

OKLAHOMA 69: In Manhattan, Kan., Wesley Iwundu scored 22 points, and Kansas State upset top-ranked Oklahoma.

Freshman reserve Dean Wade had 17 points for the Wildcats (14-9, 3-7). Buddy Hield had 23 points, but a big chunk came in the final minutes, when the Sooners (19-3, 7-3) were desperatel­y trying to rally.

No. 2 North Carolina also lost, falling 80-76 at Notre Dame. According to STATS, it was the first time the top two teams in the country lost to unranked schools on the same day since Jan. 21, 2006, when No. 1 Duke lost to Georgetown and No. 2 Florida was defeated by Tennessee.

NORTH CAROLINA 76: In South Bend, Ind., Demetrius Jackson scored 19 points,

helping Notre Dame send the Tar Heels (19-4, 8-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) to their second straight loss. Bonzie Colson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Notre Dame (16-7, 7-4.

PROVIDENCE 60: In Providence, R.I., Darryl Reynolds had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Villanova (20-3, 10-1) avenged an overtime loss at home to the Friars last month. Ben Bentil led Providence (186, 6-5) with 20 points.

PURDUE 61: In College Park, Md., Rasheed Sulaimon had 21 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, and the Terrapins (21-3, 10-2 Big Ten) extended their home winning streak to 25 games. A.J. Hammons scored 18 for the Boilermake­rs (19-5, 7-4).

COLORADO STATE 76, NEVADA 67: In Fort Collins, Colo., Antwan Scott scored 23 points and Colorado State (13-10, 5-5) ended the game on a 17-5 run. Eric Cooper Jr. had 14 points for Nevada (139, 5-5).

AIR FORCE 61, BOISE STATE 53: In Air Force Academy, Colo., CJ Siples had 25 points and seven rebounds as Air Force (12-12, 3-8) stunned Boise State (16-8, 7-4).
