AUGUSTUS GE
TENNIS
Augie, as he likes to be known, was a four-star recruit. He has an impressive list of USTA successes, including winning national championships in singles and doubles. His parents were both born in China, and are programers. He scored an impressive 800 on the math portion of the SAT and an 800 on the math subject SAT level 2 test. Last name is pronounced “Guh.”
Have you been to China
much? I haven’t been back since I was 9. It was a cool experience, but, by then, there was already a lot of pollution. It was pretty industrialized. But I liked it a lot there. I just really appreciated the culture, because that’s the kind of culture I was raised in, even though I was born in Phoenix.
As a whole, where did you
learn more respect? I still went to American schools when I was young, but my parents always taught me to be respectful. It is a big thing for me.
What got you into ten
nis? My parents played pretty recreationally, and would take me out to the park when I was young. I had a racquet when I was 4, and I’ve liked it every since.
Any other sports? I swam pretty competitively until I was about 11. But I always knew I was going to stick to tennis.
Were you heavily recruit
ed? A fair amount. By Louisville, Brown, Northwestern and New Mexico.
Do you have a little back
problem? Last season I had nearly a stress fracture, so I couldn’t train at all (removes ice pack from back) until the middle of November of 2014. It will still get inflamed a little bit.
What do you like the most
about Albuquerque? I like that the weather changes a lot more. Sometimes, when there are a few cold days in a row, I’ll start to miss (Phoenix). But I like that it’s a little bit smaller town. Everywhere I need to go is very close by, so I don’t need to drive a lot.
Would you like to play
professionally someday? I’d definitely like to give the tour a shot, especially doubles. But I also want to go to graduate school for statistics, and do something along those lines.
