Gallup, Tularosa remain undefeated

TOMÉ — Valencia’s defense throttled Centennial in the first half Friday night, and the Jaguars’ defense held the Hawks at bay in the second half of a Hawks 60-33 victory in a first-round game of the girls Class 5A state basketball tournament.

No. 7 seed Valencia (236) moves on to play No. 2 Roswell (24-2) on Tuesday morning at 9:45 at the Pit in the quarterfin­als.

On her birthday, Valencia junior guard Destinee Vigil scored a game-high 18 points.

Jags senior post Raeanne Herrera scored eight of her 11 points in the first quarter as Valencia raced out to a 16-2 lead and never looked back.

Valencia showed aggression on offense as well, attacking the rim and going 18-of-25 from the free-throw line while keeping the Hawks on their heels with foul trouble most of the night.

Centennial made just nine field goals on the night, and only three in the first half.

No. 3 LOS LUNAS 56, No. 14 ALBUQUERQU­E ACADEMY 36: In Los Lunas, the defending state champion Tigers handled the Chargers and advanced to the quarterfin­als for the fourth season in a row. Los Lunas (22-7) will play No. 6 Moriarty at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Pit.

— Kenn Rodriguez No. 6 MORIARTY 60, No. 11 FARMINGTON 47: In Moriarty, the Pintos (21-7) didn’t pull away until late as they beat the Scorpions. Farmington (14-14) had a lead late in the third quarter before Moriarty answered with some timely long-range jumpers to reclaim the lead.

ELSEWHERE IN CLASS 5A: No. 1 seed Gallup remained undefeated with a 64-37 victory over No. 16 St. Pius (6-21). The Bengals (26-0) will face No. 9 Piedra Vista in Tuesday’s quarterfin­als. The Panthers (17-9) were the only upset winner Friday, beating No. 8 Aztec 51-46. … District 2 rivals Española Valley and Los Alamos won first-rounders. The fourth-seeded Sundevils downed No. 13 seed Del Norte 47-30 (Leonardine John had a team-best 11 points for the Knights), while the fifthseede­d Hilltopper­s beat No. 12 Goddard 66-60.

Class 4A

No. 5 seed Hope Christian, the defending state champion, rolled past No. 12 Hatch Valley 58-34 in the first round.

Alivia Lewis, Christine Heisey and Jenna Hijar all reached double figures in scoring for the Huskies (199), who take on No. 4 Kirtland Central on Tuesday morning at the Pit in the quarterfin­als.

All eight of the top seeds in 4A won Friday night.

Class 3A

Each of the top seeds advanced, led by No. 1 and undefeated Tularosa (28-0).

Class 2A

No. 11 Fort Sumner, over No. 6 Dora, was the only upset winner in the first round.

Class 1A

Albuquerqu­e’s Evangel Christian will play on into next week after the sixthseede­d Eagles slipped past No. 11 Carrizozo 56-50. All the top eight seeds advanced Friday.
