Dallas Baptist demolishes UNM 33-8
24th-ranked Lobos lose second straight
Saturday was a day to forget for the University of New Mexico baseball team. The Lobos’ No. 24 national ranking will surely take a big hit — something that visiting Dallas Baptist did early and often Santa Ana Star Field.
Hit, that is — destroying UNM 33-8. Dallas Baptist (7-3), which whipped UNM 7-2 on Friday, scored in all nine innings on Saturday.
Some of the Patriots’ individual numbers were eye-popping: Luke Stratman was 5-of-7 with two homers, a double, eight RBIs and four runs; pitcher Darick Hall (2-0) went 5-of-5 with two homers, a double and six RBIs and David Martinelli was 4-of-8 with a homer, a double five RBIs and four runs.
About the only bright spot for the Lobos (6-3) was the return of preseason All-Mountain West outfielder Danny Collier. Making his first start of the year, the junior went 3-for-5 with a run and a career-high four RBIs. Dalton Bowers also had a solid game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a run and an RBI.
The Patriots rocked six Lobo pitchers for a combined 31 hits, nine of those and nine earned runs coming off starter Tyler Stevens (1-1) in just 2⅓ innings. Reliever Austin Isenhart allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs in 1⅔ innings.
The series finale is today at 1 p.m. (101.7 FM). Senior lefthander Colton Thomson will make his second start of the season for UNM.
In Las Cruces, Stephen F. Austin (8- 4) capitalized on three unearned runs and nipped New Mexico State 5-4. Leadoff hitter Brent Sakurai went 2-for-5 and scored twice for the Aggies.

TENNIS: At the McKinnon Family Tennis Center, the New Mexico men won a doubleheader from Air Force, 4-3 and 4-1. The Lobos improved to 8-10 on the season. Air Force fell to 4-7.
UNM, ranked 71st, hosts the Mountain-Pacific Invite this coming weekend, when they will host seven other teams, including defending champion San Francisco.
The UNM (5-5) women fell 4-3 at Houston, where the Lobos take on Rice today.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL: In Tempe, Ariz., New Mexico fell 3-2 to No. 17 South Carolina and 4-1 to No. 6 Florida State. The Lobos fell to 2-2.
“I think we’re playing really good ball most of the time,” UNM coach Jeff Nelson said. “We got a little emotional and let a match get away from us this afternoon, but other than that, I think it’s really good.”
SOFTBALL: Host New Mexico (10-7) swept Northern Colorado (3-10) 7-3 and 8-3. Colette Robert (5-3) pitched six innings for the game-one victory, and Brooke Breland had three doubles. Tess McPherson (2-1) earned the win in the nightcap, and Jasmine Casados hit a mammoth homer and drove in four runs. The two teams play at 10 a.m. today at UNM.
