NEW PERSPECTIVES
Two UNM graduates present art exhibit
George Evans and Zane White want to make a difference in the world through their art. The two University of New Mexico graduates have joined together to present “Surreal Experientialisim.”
The exhibit is going to run beginning today through April 2 at O’Neill’s in the Northeast Heights. An opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. on March 14.
“O’Neill’s recently put in new lighting and we thought this would be a great opportunity,” Evans says.
“Surreal Experientialism” is an exhibit that forges new perspectives on contemporary art.
It is meant to be the premiere of a new movement within the contemporary art world recently begun by the two artists.
“It seeks to go beyond the former surrealist investigations of the psychology, dreams, and the subconscious, and explore experience through contemporary perspectives on science, history, and consciousness,” Evans says.
Evans says much like the surrealists, one of the purposes is to shatter the established framework that governs rational thought in contemporary society, and free people from cultural restraints.
“This principle allows for a freedom of discourse to explore beyond the restraints of a materialist culture that only validates achievements of the documented and observable reality, and seems to favor a departure of responsibility in the form of greed for material acquisitions and selfish apathy,” he says. “This movement welcomes all of the humanities, not just the world of fine art, to forge a new dialogue within the academic and popular community.”
