Registration now for camps at zoo

Full week, extended hours offered for working parents

- BY YAMILEX VEGA FOR THE JOURNAL

Spend a week in the outdoors, exploring the wonders of the Rio Grande and watching animals up close and personal do their thing. BioPark Zoo spring break camp registration is now open.

“This camp program is not only dedicated for children’s fun but also to promote care for our BioPark and environment. We hope it teaches kids to grow up and take good care as well as protect our environment,” says Kathryn Venzor, curator of education.

For five days campers will experience possible interaction with BioPark animals, walks around Tingley Beach, one-on-one talks with BioPark staff, fun games and educational experiences. Although it is not guaranteed children will be able to physically interact with any of the animals, due to the BioPark’s policy of not forcing their animals to do anything they don’t want, they will get to learn interesting facts about them and be extremely close to them.

Camp days will be March 28-April 1 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and is available for grades 2-6. This is the first time camp is available for the entire week with extended hours that accommodate parents’ working hours.

The cost of the camp is $250 per child for the full week or $50 a day for a single session.

“It is one of the more affordable camps,” says Venzor. The cost covers admission along with education and staff pay. BioPark members get a $25 discount for the weeklong option and $5 discount on single day activities. Each day will consist of a different activity.

It is recommended that campers wear layers of clothing and walking shoes. It is required for campers to bring their own lunch. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt and a reusable water bottle.
