SPORTS SPEAK UP!

COACH NEAL is out of touch with reality. No size (Aget gets two fouls and is out of the game within 3 minutes), limited athleticism, and he wants a point guard. I thought that was Hunter and Mathis spelled by Brown. Watching San Diego State tonight against George Washington made me wish we could recruit like the Aztecs, and Neal could coach like George Washington coach Mike Lonergan. Sad year coming up.

THERE HAVE BEEN numerous misguided decisions by the UNM athletic department in the past two decades, none more egregious than the elimination of the gymnastics program. As Rick Wright wrote in his article updating former coach Rusty Mitchell’s health, Mitchell produced 53 All-Americans. The gymnastics events in Johnson Gym were spectacular. For 34 years, Mitchell put his heart and soul into the program only to have the rug pulled out from under him. The picture in the Journal of this former Olympian balanced with one arm on the gymnastics facility sign personifies who he is — a champion.

TIMOTHY SAYS Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskie women “dominate” because “they get the top recruiting class every year” and “they have 3 of 5 first-team All-Americans” (2, actually). Isn’t that precisely what we wish UNM would/could do? As for the “minimal talent” in women’s hoops, he’s not watching the same game I am. Granted, they’re not quite as tall or athletic as the men, but most of the women I’ve seen can really play.

IF THE Albuquerque City Council is wise, they will immediately step in regarding the situation at Ladera Golf Course. Let the Zimmerlys know that they will be allowed to continue to operate the course and a long term deal will soon be worked out. If not, game over and the boycott is on for Ladera by Albuquerque area golfers as of (Friday).

THE TY MURRAY Invitational is preventing UNM from getting to host any NCAA March Madness Tournament games. This prevents us from ever hosting magical games (such as NC State’s upset over Houston in 1983). It also takes away a major recruiting ploy from UNM. Both events makes lots of money for UNM and the city. The Invitational should either be moved to Tingley Coliseum (where there are facilities for the animals) or moved to another date. It is time for New Mexicans to make a stand!
