PORTALES — A 16-year-old Lubbock, Texas, girl has died of injuries suffered when a vehicle crashed in Portales during a police chase.

Portales police said officers were dispatched early Tuesday after reports of a suspicious vehicle in an alleyway, the Portales News-Tribune reported. When officers arrived, the vehicle fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended in a one-vehicle crash.

Portales Police Department spokesman Charlie Smart said three people were in the vehicle: a male driver believed to be 18 years old, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, all of Lubbock. The driver and the girl were airlifted to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition, and the girl later died at the hospital.

Police said the vehicle was reported as stolen out of Lubbock and the juveniles were listed as runaways.
