RISING STARR

Northeast Heights brewpub to begin serving its own beers

- By Rozanna M. Martinez

The wait is over for Starr Brothers beer.

Starr Brothers Brewing Company will tap four of its own beers beginning April 8. The brewery, which opened in January, had been offering guest taps featuring local craft beers and one from Ballast Point out of San Diego. The guest taps will remain, but now Starr Brothers also will have its own brews available.

They will be the Lampshade Porter, Red Zepplin, Starrstruck IPA and Thunderr Ale.

“The porter is just basically a robust porter,” Starr Brothers head brewer Rob Whitlock said. “It’s just a malty beer. It’s really kind of chocolaty and a little roasty. It’s a typical porter.”

Red Zepplin is a hoppy Americanstyle red ale that is a rather big beer at almost 8 percent alcohol content.

“The Starrstruck IPA is going to be sort of a West Coast-style IPA,” Whitlock said. “It’s got Centennial, Cascade and Simcoe hops in it. It’s done with a double dry hop method.”

Whitlock added that Starrstruck, the house IPA, has a “bright, citrusy” finish to it.

Thunderr Ale is Starr Brothers’ special IPA.

“The special IPA is what I call a West Coast transplant IPA,” Whitlock said. “It’s very, very hoppy, but it’s got a good malt backbone in it also. The special IPA is done with a lot of Citra hops. It has Cascade, Amarillo and Citra (hops).”

Whitlock is also already brewing for the next round. He’s currently brewing an American-style wheat ale that he has named Electric Sun. It is tentatively expected to be available in the next couple weeks.

“We’re just so happy to be brewing,” co-owner Heather Starr said. “We’re just thrilled (Whitlock) can do it. We’re just happy because he makes great beer and we want everybody to try it. So many people are asking about, looking forward to it, so we’re stoked. He’s been doing brewing for a long time. He’s an award-winning home brewer.”

Starr Brothers will continue to offer its guest taps with craft beer from local breweries. It also carries cider and offers a wine list featuring white and red varieties, including sangria, pinot grigio, savignon blanc, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon.

“We want to make sure we have something for everyone,” Starr said. “If there is a demand for something that takes a long time to make of course we want to keep those up. We also like to still support (local breweries)... It’s just good to have a variety for everybody.”
