Higher calling

For King & Country on a journey of love, compassion

- By Adrian Gomez Arts Editor

Joel Smallbone recently traveled to Puerto Rico to perform.

During his trip there, he also was able to screen a rough cut of the film “Priceless” to about 300 guests.

It was filmed in New Mexico and is slated for a fall release.

And the project has meant a lot to Smallbone.

“This was literally the first public eyes that have seen it,” he says. “It felt great to get some feedback on the film. I’m excited for it to hit the theaters later this year.”

In the meantime, Smallbone and his brother, Luke, are touring in support of their 2014 album, “Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong.” which also got a re-release with bonus tracks in 2015.

The brothers make up the Christian rock duo For King & Country.

The pair have released two albums, along with three EPs.

The duo’s next single is called “Priceless” and was inspired by the film.

“The film has meant so much to us,” he says. “We’ve been on this journey, and during that time, we’ve been able to tell this story. It’s about love and life. We have to cherish each one and have compassion for others in this world.”

The brothers debuted in 2012 and have since taken the Christian music scene by storm.

With the release of the latest album — the duo’s highest-charting album — the Smallbones have earned two Grammy nominations as well as appeared on “The Today Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Smallbone says it’s been wonderful to see the duo’s profile rise over the years and he has to remind himself that there is a lot of hard work behind the duo’s success.

“We’ve certainly had our ups and downs both professionally and personally,” he says. “But we’ve been able to wade through each with the help of family and God. We’re humbled that each time we get back out on stage, the audiences are bigger and willing to give us a chance. It’s the most rewarding thing about our jobs.”
